When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible but in the end they always fail, think of it ...... always. Mahatma Ghandi

As of September 11, 2001, the lives of another generation have been changed. I once had a conversation with my Grandfather about why my generation cared so little about a country that had given them so much. How could they show such a lack of respect for something that he had nearly lost his life for. I answered him by saying that we have never had to do anything for our freedom. It was given to us and therefore is taken for granted.

As I watched the towers of the World Trade Center collapse I realized that I would never take my freedom for granted again. Our sense of security has been stolen from us and for some it will never be returned.

So what will happen to this country that has always rallied together in times of distress? Before the 11th I would have given a very negative reply to this question. I would have spoken of apathy, indifference, greed, and self interest. That is all the news has ever reported. How was I to know that there were so many good people in this nation?

Over 250 policeman and fireman gave their lives trying to save the lives of people they had never met. People lined up to donate blood to assist the victims. Companies have assisted their competitors who lost everything they had to get back on their feet. Retail stores can't keep American flags in stock because so many people want to show their pride in America. Many people of my generation who said that they would have never considered doing any type of military service are now ready to serve when their country needs them. Our country came together and asked for God's help.

Now you ask me what will happen to this country. I realize that we have our problems but we have so many God fearing people that I fear for those who oppose us. This country was built on freedom and freedom will reign as long as there are those who are willing to defend it.

My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died. Land of the pilgrims' pride. From every mountain side, let freedom ring! Samuel F. Smith
