When you watched God's Army, were you offended when the man received a Priesthood blessing? When you watched Brigham City, were you offended when the sacrament was blessed and passed? When you watched The Testament at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, were you offended when Christ healed the blind man? Where you offended when Joseph Smith healed the girl during the movie Legacy?
I have asked a number of people these same questions and in the first two cases a majority have said that yes they were offended or felt uncomfortable while no one has ever said that they were offended while watching The Testament or Legacy.
Why is this? Many people say that they are offended by Richard Dutcher's movies (God's Army & Brigham City) because he shows things that are too sacred to be shown in a movie. The Testament shows similar scenes but since the L.D.S. church authorized this film, people say it's o.k. to show these things.
Here is my question. Has Mr.. Dutcher shown anything in his movies that the average person on the street couldn't see if they were to walk into an L.D.S. church on any given Sunday? No. You may argue that those things are only to be seen in church and not on a movie screen. So I will refer back to the Testament and Legacy which happen to be shown on movie screens to the public. Have the latter day prophets not told us to use our talents to share the gospel with our neighbors and friends?
Isn't that what Richard Dutcher is doing? He is producing movies about our culture that let people look into our lives and see how we live and what we believe. Isn't that what we want? Then why are so many people openly opposed to someone who is doing exactly that? He is making the most of his talent by showing thousands of people what L.D.S. people are really like.
If you don't want to watch his movies then don't go and see them. It just fascinates me that so many people talk about how terrible Mr. Dutcher's movies are and how they would never go and see another one of his movies. Why are people afraid to go to a movie about their own culture but have no problem going to a movie that celebrates adultery or violence? It just makes no sense to me.
