At my job right now since the economy isn't doing very well I am being asked to be more proactive with customers. I think that this is a good business practice both for me and my company. In order to give the employees incentive to be more proactive we recently had a contest where we were ranked nationally among our peers on how much revenue we produced.
I am not writing this to brag about how well I did, but to show another example of how ridiculous and frustrating it is to work in Corporate America. Our contest recently finished and I was able to place 6th in the nation. I was very happy to see that ranking and I felt that my annual evaluation would reflect my effort.
Yesterday I had a meeting with my boss to go over my annual evaluation. 30% of my evaluation would be based on calls that my boss had listened to over the last few months to determine whether or not I was being proactive on my calls. This can be tracked by the computers as was done in our contest but our managers are also required to listen to phone calls to give their opinion.

During the meeting my boss pulled out his evaluation sheet that he created for my team and on it were the scores of the members of my team. I looked at the sheet and saw that every member of my team had received a score of 50%, meaning that at least half of the calls that were listened to, the employee was proactive on the call. I did say every member of my team but I meant every member of my team except for me. I received a score of 0%. This meant that my score would reflect that I was never proactive on my calls.
This was very frustrating to me because an employee's career is based on their review score and I had just scored a zero on 30% of my review. I asked my manager how it was possible to place 6th in the nation in a contest that reflects proactivity of the reps and yet none of my phone calls were scored as being proactive. Of course as a good manager he listened to my view and then quickly became very defensive because I was obviously questioning his ability as a manager by bringing this up. I feel that there must be some mistake but his ego will not allow for mistakes so I will suffer the consequences.
I often wonder if anyone manages with logic in Corporate America or if it is not allowed. I guess I will just have to resort to kissing butt and agreeing to everything that my manager says in order to get back onto better terms with him. I hate playing this game.
