Today In College Football, Money Talks And Nothing Else Matters

In my weekly commentary I have never really mentioned sports. I usually write about something that is on my mind but for some reason sports has never been mentioned so you might think that I don't really care about sports. I will ease your concerns and assure you that I care about sports. In fact I care about sports too much.

Out of all the sports that I follow, my favorite is college football and I root for the BYU Cougars. Yes, the team that is currently 12-0 and ranked 12th in the (B)ull (C)rap (S)ystem. For those of you who don't know how the BCS works I will briefly explain it. There are two human generated polls (the AP poll and the Coaches poll), 8 computer polls, and something called the Strength of schedule that determine who are the best college football teams in the nation. After all of the numbers were crunched Miami is on top with an undefeated record. At number three is Nebraska which lost its last game to Colorado 62-36 and at number four is Colorado which recently beat #3 Nebraska 63-36. I know that sounds confusing. How could Nebraska have just lost to Colorado yet be ranked ahead of them? Now let me remind you that BYU is 12-0 and ranked number 12. It doesn't make sense but their are a lot of people who it makes sense to. Here are some of the reasons and why the argument is just a bunch of crap.

1. BYU doesn't play very many difficult teams. #6 Florida lost to an unranked Auburn team.
2. BYU has barely beaten some very poor teams such as Wyoming and Mississippi St. #2 Tennessee beat a terrible Kentucky team by 3 points. #5 Oregon almost lost to a bad Oregon St. team last week. #10 Maryland was killed by Florida St and #11 Oklahoma lost to a pathetic Oklahoma St. team. Who did BYU lose to? No one.
3. Did you know that it was actually an argument that since BYU fans don't drink that the BCS bowls don't want BYU in their bowl. The whole reason is $$$. The college system is based on dollars and not really on who is the better team.

Now for the real reasons BYU won't play in the BCS bowls.

1. There is more than a $10 million dollar payout for each team that goes to a bowl. The six coferences that run the BCS aren't really thrilled about giving money to someone outside of the coalition.

2. I sit hear thinking of another reason other than money and nothing comes to mind. This whole system is based on money and money talks.

I read an article today that suggested what would happen if the BCS had an opportunity to make decisions on this years Olympic games. Here is what it said.

Imagine what could happen if officials from the Bowl Championship Series ran the Winter Olympics this February. The favorite ice skater of the BCS could fall twice but still earn enough points to win the gold medal, despite a perfect performance from an underdog. The system's beloved ski jumper could fail to qualify for the finals, yet still win the event if it was determined that one of the finalists performed what was considered an easier jump. Or perhaps an undefeated ice hockey team could be left out of the medal rounds.

What kind of sport doesn't allow all of its participants a shot at the championship? I don't think that there is one except for college football. BYU is considering taking this to court but that will only help future teams. It really just amazes me that this system was allowed to be established in the first place.
