Diamond Experts

I work with a guy who is getting married in a month or two. You have all met a guy like this. He is very proud of himself for his great accomplishment and he has to let the whole world know how amazing he is. Now I’m not saying that I’m not happy for him but I get really frustrated when guys brag about the wedding ring that they purchase for their new fiancé.

Before I go any further, stop right now and think about how much you know about diamonds. You may know a little bit more or less than I do but I think that it would be pretty safe to say that we all know practically nothing about diamonds except for the fact that most of them come from 3rd world countries and we are willing to pay a ton of money for them.

Now even though we have agreed that we really know nothing about diamonds, guys who are getting engaged seem to obtain this expert knowledge about this shiny rock. They start talking about the amount of flaws in a diamond and they start talking about how the more yellow there is in the stone the less valuable it is. Some of the guys who really do their research will find out that if you put a diamond under a microscope many of them will have flaws. Obviously these guys who do their homework won’t be taken advantage and won’t fall for buying a stone that appears perfect to the naked eye but is clearly flawed when put under a microscope.

Once these guys have done their research on the quality of the diamond they now have to decide how big they want their rock to be. As we all know diamonds are measured in carats which in Chinese means, I’m ripping you off for something that weighs 200 milligrams”. If you buy a high quality one carat diamond you will pay more than two thousand dollars.

Now for my favorite part. This guy at work, just like every other guy, comes to me and tells me what a great deal he just got on a diamond. These guys all say the same thing. They all know this other guy who sells diamonds whole sale to diamond retail stores. The wholesaler sold him the diamond for the same price that they sell the diamonds to the retail store.

Let’s all take a moment and honor this guy for being such a good shopper. Here is a lesson we should all learn from this guy. Always trust a diamond salesman. Believe everything he says. Of course he is going to tell you that he has the best price in town. Can you imagine a salesman saying, “I don’t know if you want to buy a little tiny rock for thousands of dollars from me. You might be able to get a better deal down the road.” How many salesman are going to say as you can see this diamond looks absolutely wonderful to the naked eye. It may have a few flaws under the microscope, but when are you ever going to look at it under a microscope?

So as you can see everybody ends up happy. The guy fells like he gets a deal and the diamond salesman can buy himself a new BMW.
