Identity
Someone asked someone to get me some information about someone so that someone could put that information on some family website. Someone just wanted to put some birthdays on an online calendar so that some people could all lookup some others birthdays.
The response someone received, or the one this person told me that they received was that someone works for the government and has had training by the government and that putting your birthdays online would be a breach of security. My opinion was and still is, who in the hell cares what this someone thinks. This someone’s identity will not be stolen because someone knows his birthday. Just because this person works for the government, does not mean that this person is smart. I personally think this person is just being scared about something that they should not be scared about. I know a number of people that have worked for “the government” and they were trained for their positions thus meaning government training. This government training has taught them how to send a package to Main.
People are crazy. I have heard some of the craziest things from people. One person I know feared that his identity would be stolen because some random information on the internet could be found about him. People and their weird ideas that their identity will be stolen because of things like on the internet on a random site that I can’t even get indexed on any search engine will be the source of getting that needed birthday to ruin or steal someone’s identity.
Seriously folks, I think some people are paranoid about things on the internet. Ok Richard, you think you are all knowing because you work for the government and know how things are run. Let me give you a quick little look at how flawed your idea is.
I can think of a number of times that I have learned the birthday of other individuals in this world. If I can come across thousands of people’s birthdays without even trying, what could I do if I were trying to gather this confidential information?
Have you ever been at work and seen that someone had a birthday? Have you ever been at a friend’s house and discovered that some random person had a birthday? Have you ever read in a local newspaper about someone’s birthday or birth? Did you know that newspaper articles are stored forever? Did you know that these newspapers are accessible to the public? Have you ever realized that everyone knows the birthdays of famous, rich, and important people? Have you ever read people magazine? Did you realize that rich people are not suing magazines when they mention their birthday in a magazine? Have you ever seen a birthday card discarded and laying around? Have you ever met anyone that always mentions their birthday to everyone they meet? Should these people fear that their identity is stolen? There are so many ways that you can get someone’s birthday if you want it. Most people give this information to people they hardly know. Birthdays are public events, not hidden secret events.
Now let’s say that you don’t know the person and have no contact with this person at all. Are these the people you should be fearing? The people who don’t know you and have no association with you who could care less if you died tomorrow? Lets think about how many people and from how many sources that have not been mentioned yet have your birthday stored in some database on some computer. Since computers are unhackable, and we all trust every individual who comes in contact with these databases.
How many credit cards have you applied for that have required your age? How many job applications have you turned in? How many jobs have you worked for? Have you ever received a birthday card in the mail from your insurance company? Do you trust all your neighbors with this information? Do you trust the people in your ward? Why fear the people on the internet when your own neighbors know so much more about you? How can you trust anyone? How can anyone have a birthday in America again without fearing the inevitable identity stealing?
If anyone wanted to get my birthday they could get it. Just apply for a job at a major insurance company and you will have access to hundreds of thousands of birthdays. Not only birthdays, but companies like that have access to your social security number!!! That should strike fear into you right now.
We all trust, and have to trust companies with confidential information. When I worked at Big Planet, I had access to thousands of credit card numbers. I had access to other employee access so that they could not track me looking into accounts. At big planet I could have stolen thousands of numbers just by listening. When customers read their card numbers, the employees repeat information like credit card numbers and birthdays out loud to verify critical information.
Come on people, you trust government agencies, family members, neighbors, church members, coworkers, bankers, a host of internet sites when you sign up for things, and a number of other people with information like your birthday. If someone wants to know your birthday, they will find it.
I vow here this day to not have another birthday because people will know when my birthday is. And them knowing my confidential information, they will be able to overtake my life and ruin it.
All I wanted was to put some stupid birthday on the family calendar so that people could celebrate that day for you. Now I think I am going to send some manure in the mail to this certain person because I looked up all your personal information on the internet.
Remember to burn your birthday cards and don’t let them sit unattended. Trust nobody and quit having those birthdays. Maybe we should start worrying about the pictures I put on my website because people will know your hair color and eye color and will be able to make masks to truly steal and use your identity.
